Autism Acceptance
Date Published: August 2018
In this webinar, Stephen Shore, M.Ed. discusses the autism acceptance movement and how to reframe the term disability. This webinar is 60 minutes long.
Who is Stephen Shore?
Stephen Shore, M.Ed., was diagnosed as a child with “atypical development and strong autistic tendencies.” Doctors considered him “too sick” for outpatient treatment, so they recommended institutionalization. He was nonverbal until age 4, but with much support from his parents, teachers, and others, eventually including his wife, Shore is now a professor at Adelphi University, in New York, where his research focuses on matching best practices to the needs of people with autism.
In addition to working with children with autism and talking about life on the autism spectrum, Stephen is internationally renowned for his presentations, consultations and writings on life span issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure. His most recent book, College for Students with Disabilities, combines personal stories and research for promoting success in higher education.
Shore is a board member of Autism Speaks and the Organization for Autism Research, president emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England, and a member of the advisory board of the Autism Society. He previously served as a member of SPARK’s Scientific Advisory Board. He also serves on the boards of the Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association, the US Autism and Asperger Association and other autism-related organizations.
